When faced with challenges, setbacks, or unexpected circumstances, it’s easy to focus on everything outside our control. A delayed project. A difficult conversation. An economic shift. A change in plans.
But what if the most powerful factor in any situation is something we control completely?
On Juneteenth, the Pillar Bank team participated in training centered around The R Factor®, a framework that explores how our responses to life’s events shape outcomes. The concept is simple yet powerful: while we cannot always control what happens to us, we can control how we respond. (Link to the R Factor book.)
The formula is often expressed as: Event + Response = Outcome
Events happen every day. Some are positive, some are challenging, and many are completely unexpected. While we may not have a say in the event itself, our response influences what happens next.
This idea applies well beyond the workplace. Consider a few examples:
• A financial setback occurs. Do you ignore it, or create a plan to recover?
• A goal feels out of reach. Do you give up, or break it into smaller steps?
• A disagreement arises. Do you react emotionally, or seek understanding and solutions?
Personal accountability doesn’t mean blaming ourselves for circumstances beyond our control. Instead, it means recognizing the power we have as individuals to choose our next step.
A few practical ways to apply this mindset include:
Pause Before Reacting
When challenges arise, take a moment to assess the situation before responding.
Focus on Solutions
Instead of dwelling on the problem, identify one action you can take to move forward.
Own Your Choices
Small decisions made consistently often have a greater impact than major decisions made occasionally.
Learn From Setbacks
Every obstacle offers an opportunity to gain experience, adjust, and grow.
As Pillar Bank continues to invest in employee development, we are reminded that growth isn’t just about gaining knowledge — it’s about developing the habits and mindset that help us navigate change and serve others well.
Whether at work, at home, or in managing personal finances, one principle remains true: while we can’t control every event, we can always choose our response.
